Why surebets disappear

Stale odds, closed markets, mismatched events and prices far from the market: why found is not confirmed.

Most surebets you'll ever see are gone before anyone can place them. Knowing why is the difference between a scanner that pings you and one you can act on.

Stale odds

A scanner reads a price, then the book moves it. If the scanner's copy is even a few seconds old, the surebet it shows may already be gone. This is the most common reason a "surebet" doesn't exist when you open the book.

Closed markets

Books suspend or pull markets: news, a lineup change, too much money on one side, kick-off. The price is still on the scanner's screen, but the book won't take a bet.

Mismatched events

Two books list the same teams, but not the same bet: a different match, a different period, a different line, or overtime counted at one book and not the other. Matching events across books is the hardest part of building a scanner, and a mismatch looks exactly like a big surebet.

Prices far from the market

When a surebet's margin is unusually large, one price is usually far from what every other book quotes. Sometimes it's real. Often it's a pricing error the book may void (a palp). Check that leg before you bet it.

Found is not confirmed

That's why our board separates the two:

  1. Found: the scanners spot prices that add up to a surebet.
  2. Confirmed: every leg is re-read at its book. Only if all of them are still there does the surebet show as confirmed.
  3. Re-checking: if one book's data is late, the surebet stays visible but marked as not confirmed right now. Don't place it until it confirms again.
  4. Flagged: a leg far from the other books carries a warning. We show it labelled rather than hiding it, because sometimes it's real.

Each book is refreshed at least every 10 seconds, and a book that falls behind can't confirm anything. The daily verification log publishes found against confirmed, so you can see how big the gap is.

What it means for you

  • Act on confirmed surebets, not found ones.
  • Look at the verification clock: the older the last re-read, the more likely a price moved.
  • Place the leg most likely to move first (usually the one at the book whose price is furthest from the others).
  • If a surebet goes while you're placing it, read The real risks for what to do with a leg already placed.
