Is arbitrage betting legal?

Arbitrage betting breaks no betting law by itself. What decides it: where you live, your age, each book's terms, limits, palps, what crosses the line, and taxes.

Short answer: placing bets on every outcome of a match at different sportsbooks is not, by itself, against any betting law we know of. Where sports betting is legal for you, so is arbitrage betting. What can stop you is not the law but the books: their terms, their limits and their right to close an account. This page explains the difference. It is general information, not legal advice.

Why arbitrage is not cheating

A surebet uses prices the books publish themselves. You don't touch the event, you don't use inside information and you don't trick anyone: you take one price at one book and the opposite price at another, at stakes that make every outcome pay about the same. Each bet is an ordinary bet, accepted by the book under its own rules.

The edge comes from books disagreeing with each other. That is the market working, and it's the same reason price comparison sites exist.

Where the law does come in

Betting law is about you and where you are, not about which side of a market you take:

  • Whether sports betting is legal where you live. It depends on the country, and in some countries on the state or region. Some only allow licensed local books.
  • Your age. Betting is for adults only, and the minimum age differs by country.
  • Which books you may use. A book licensed in one place may not be allowed to take customers from another. Every book lists, in its terms, who may open an account and from which countries.

If betting at a book is legal for you, betting on both sides of a match at two such books is too. If it isn't, arbitrage doesn't make it so.

What books can do

Legal doesn't mean welcome. A book earns its margin from customers who lose over time, and an account that keeps taking out-of-line prices costs it money. So books can, within their own terms:

  • Limit your stakes, sometimes to very little. This is the most common reaction. See Books, limits and account health.
  • Close your account. Most terms let a book end the relationship; the balance is normally paid out unless a rule was broken.
  • Void bets placed at an obvious error. A palpable error clause lets a book cancel a bet at a price that was clearly a mistake, which can leave the other leg of your surebet uncovered. See Palps.
  • Apply arbitrage clauses. Some books' terms mention arbitrage directly, for example around bonuses and promotions. Read them before you deposit.

None of this is a crime on either side. It's a contract between you and the book, and the terms you accepted decide what each side may do.

What does break the rules

The trouble starts when someone tries to get around a book's terms rather than live with them:

  • More than one account at the same book, or an account in someone else's name.
  • A VPN or false details to open or use an account from a place the book doesn't accept.
  • Bonus abuse: claiming the same offer many times through linked accounts.

These can mean a closed account and confiscated balances, and some can go beyond a book's terms. We don't help with any of them, and Arbistoteles itself is for adults, outside Spain, without a VPN: it's in the statement you accept at sign-up.

Taxes

Arbitrage profit is betting winnings like any other. Whether winnings are taxed, and how, depends on where you live: some countries tax them, some don't, and some only tax above a threshold or for professionals. Keep a record of every leg, its stake, its price and its result; it makes both your own numbers and any tax question much easier.

What Arbistoteles does and doesn't do

Arbistoteles shows information: prematch surebets across 10 crypto sportsbooks, with every leg re-read at its book before a surebet shows. It doesn't place bets, doesn't hold your money and doesn't open accounts for you. Which books you use, and whether betting is legal where you are, is yours to check.
