Glossary
Arb, leg, palp, gubbed, stale, prematch and the rest, in one place.
The words you'll meet on forums, at the books and on our board.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Arb / arbitrage | Short for a surebet: every outcome covered at different books for less than you get back. |
| Back | To bet on an outcome happening. |
| Bankroll | The money you set aside for betting, spread across your books. |
| Book | A bookmaker or sportsbook. |
| Closing line | The last price before an event starts; often the market's best estimate. |
| Confirmed | On our board: every leg re-read at its book and still there. |
| Decimal odds | The total return per 1 staked, stake included: 2.50 returns 2.50. |
| Draw no bet | A football market where a draw returns the stake. |
| Event / fixture | One match or game. |
| Found | A surebet our scanners spotted, before the re-check. Found is not confirmed. |
| Gubbed / limited | When a book cuts the maximum stake it accepts from you. |
| Handicap | A market where one side gets a head start or a deficit. |
| Implied probability | 1 / decimal odds: the chance at which a price breaks even. |
| In-play / live | Betting after the event has started. We don't cover it. |
| Leg | One bet of a surebet, at one book. |
| Margin | On our board, the share of the total stake a surebet returns on top: 1 − (sum of 1/odds), as a percentage. At one book, its built-in cut. |
| Market | One question about an event (winner, total, handicap) with a fixed set of answers. |
| Off-market / flagged | A price far from what the other books quote, often an error at that book. |
| Overround / vig | A book's built-in margin on a market. |
| Palp | A palpable error: a price so wrong the book may void the bet. |
| Prematch | Before the event starts. Everything on our board is prematch. |
| Push | A whole-line handicap or total that lands exactly on the line: stake returned. |
| Re-checking | On our board: one book's data is late, so the surebet isn't confirmed right now. |
| Settlement rules | How a book decides a bet: overtime, retirements, postponements. |
| Stake | The amount you bet. |
| Stale | A price older than it looks; the book may have moved it already. |
| Surebet | Prices at different books that cover every outcome of a market for less than the return. |
| Totals | Over / under markets on the combined score. |
| Value bet | A single bet priced above its true chance. Different from a surebet: it can lose. |
| Void | A bet cancelled by the book, stake returned. |
